Boudhanath Stupa The Boudhanath stupa is one of the holiest and most recognisable sites in Kathmandu. The stupa is built on an octagonal base, surrounded by prayer wheels and images of Buddhist deities. It has colourful prayer flags, blessed with juniper incense each new year, draped from its metre central spire. All this helps to make the temple one of Kathmandu’s most iconic and photographed sites. Boudhanath is rich in symbolism: Look out for Tibetan monks, with shaven heads and maroon robes, and pilgrims spinning prayer wheels and buying yak butter and tsampa roasted barley flour. Be careful to observe Tibetan custom by walking around the stupa in a clockwise direction.

Share Shares Mountains have always been revered as places of power. Throughout history, mystics and hermits retreated to their heights to obtain enlightenment. The ancients even believed that some mountains were the dwellings of their gods. The Klamath tribe believed that Mount Shasta and nearby volcano Mount Mazama were avatars of the gods who spewed fire at each other in epic battles.
Llao, the god of the Below-World, wanted the beautiful daughter of the Klamath chief for his wife. But the girl rejected Llao because of his horrible underworld appearance. Angered, Llao promised to seek his vengeance on her people. The Klamath petitioned Skell, the god of the Above-World, to fight on their behalf. The battle caused earthquakes and explosions as they flung burning rocks back and forth from peak to peak. According to legend, the fight grew so intense that two medicine men sacrificed themselves by jumping into a pit in the Below-World.
Urged on by their sacrifice, Skell redoubled his efforts and finally defeated Llao. Much later in the s, spiritualist Frederick Spencer Oliver wrote a book about a secret city that existed in tunnels beneath Mount Shasta. He mentioned the mystical continent of Lemuria , an idea which theosophists later latched onto and expanded for their own purposes.

Share Monasticism or monachism, literally the act of “dwelling alone” Greek monos, monazein, monachos , has come to denote the mode of life pertaining to persons living in seclusion from the world, under religious vows and subject to a fixed rule, as monks, friars, nuns, or in general as religious. The basic idea of monasticism in all its varieties is seclusion or withdrawal from the world or society. The object of this is to achieve a life whose ideal is different from and largely at variance with that pursued by the majority of mankind ; and the method adopted, no matter what its precise details may be, is always self-abnegation or organized asceticism.
Taken in this broad sense monachism may be found in every religious system which has attained to a high degree of ethical development, such as Brahmin, Buddhist, Jewish, Christian, and Moslem religions, and even in the sytem of those modern communistic societies, often anti-theological in theory, which are a special feature of recent social development especially in America.
Hence it is claimed that a form of life which flourishes in environments so diverse must be the expression of a principle inherent in human nature and rooted therein no less deeply than the principle of domesticity, though obviously limited to a far smaller portion of mankind. It has already been pointed out that the monastic ideal is an ascetic one, but it would be wrong to say that the earliest Christian asceticism was monastic.
Any such thing was rendered impossible by the circumstances in which the early Christians were placed, for in the first century or so of the Church’s existence the idea of living apart from the congregation of the faithful, or of forming within it associations to practise special renunciations in common was out of the question. While admitting this, however, it is equally certain that monasticism, when it came, was little more than a precipitation of ideas previously in solution among Christians.
For asceticism is the struggle against worldly principles, even with such as are merely worldly without being sinful. The world desires and honours wealth, so the ascetic loves and honours poverty. If he must have something in the nature of property then he and his fellows shall hold it in common, just because the world respects and safeguards private ownership. In like manner he practises fasting and virginity that thereby he may repudiate the licence of the world.

The account is only interesting for its information on the state of the approach.

Description[ edit ] Bridge Street, showing shops both at street level and on the Row At street level the shops and other premises are similar to those found in other towns and cities, although many of the premises are entered by going down a few steps. On the first floor level are more shops and other premises, set back from the street, in front of which is a continuous walkway. The storey above this overlaps the walkway, which makes it a covered walkway, and this constitutes what is known as the “Row”.
On the street side of the walkways are railings and an area which was used as shelves or stalls for the display of goods. The floors above the level of the Rows are used for commercial or domestic purposes, or for storage. They are continuous on both sides of Upper Bridge Street, along most of Watergate and Eastgate Street, but only for a short stretch along the east side of Northgate Street.
In the Roman period the main street, now Watergate Street and Eastgate Street, lay on an east-west axis. It was joined at what is now Chester Cross by the main road from the south, present-day Bridge Street. The first record of the Rows appears in , although it is uncertain whether it refers to a Row as it would be recognised today. The “earliest unambiguous instance” of the use of the term for an elevated walkway is in

With more and more foreign investment and funding, Pakistan was able to build its major road and air networks to cater mass movements of cargo and inter-city travel. Roads are being developed by several consultants from the Northern Areas all the way down to the Port of Karachi. Statistics from the last decade show tourism is a “market led industry and not supply driven” which has led a large decline in travel to Pakistan.
This has led to fewer tour agencies being set up and development of historical sites.

What does creed mean? A creed is an alw or a teaching of faith. The word is almost always used in a religious context, and refers to a set or system of beliefs taught by a particular religion. What is the FFA creed? The FFA Creed is when you memorize whats below: I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds-achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy hav…e come to us from the struggles of former years.
I believe that to live and work on a good farm, or to be engaged in other agricultural pursuits, is pleasant as well as challenging’ for I know the joys and discomforts of agricultural life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny. I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of progressive agriculturists to serve our own and the public interest in producing and marketing the product of out toil.
I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so–for others as well as myself in less need for charity and more of it when needed’ in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me.
